our story

Future Steps is a specialist occupational therapy service in the North East,

dedicated to supporting children with sensory and motor challenges.

Founded by Julie Davis in 2013,

our team offers a range of tailored programmes in clinics, schools, and the community.

With expertise in Sensory Integration Therapy, we focus on enhancing development, educational outcomes, and emotional wellbeing through holistic, child-centered support.

The Clinic

    Family Waiting Area

    Our Family Waiting Area is a comfortable space for all visitors. While we encourage parental involvement in treatment, we understand it’s not always possible. Parents, carers, and professionals can watch treatment on screens in the waiting area and take some well-earned time to relax, if needed.

    Assessment Room

    The Assessment Room is the first place you'll visit at Future Steps. It’s a calm, low-stimulation space designed for assessing the needs of children and young people. The room is light and colourful but not overly distracting, helping to encourage focus during assessments.

    Rainbow Room

    The Rainbow Room features brightly coloured Lycra hammocks where children can climb and relax. During their time in the hammocks, we work on motor planning, discrimination, perception, gross motor skills and regulation by climbing and crashing from the hammocks.

    Sensory Room

    Our large, state-of-the-art Sensory Room is an exciting space that engages even the most hesitant children. Therapists use swings, a crash pool, interactive screens, and a zipline to encourage sensory development, with over 12 swings available for therapeutic activities.

    Early Years Room

    The Early Years Room is a cosy space designed for babies and young children or those who prefer a smaller area. It features various textures, swings and suspension points, a slide, water play, and a ball pool, helping children develop their sensory and motor skills.

    Motor and Messy Play Room

    The Motor and Messy Play Room is equipped with climbing walls, a large climbing frame, monkey bars, and trampolines to help children practice their motor skills and build resilience and strength. This space also features sensory messy play, allowing children to explore new textures. For older children, gym equipment such as pull-up bars and medicine balls are available.

    Sensory Garden

    Our Sensory Garden is a vibrant, exploratory space where children can climb, balance, and engage with sand, water, and grow various plants and vegetables. Being outdoors in this calming environment helps reduce anxiety and stress, support regulation, and promote physical strength and emotional development through connection with nature.
